Sub normal Energy Consumption

February 18, 2010

Nick Mayo carried out a detailed energy assessment of Canberra’s Sustainable House. Key appliances were replaced with worlds’ best ultra low energy units.

Total house energy consumption should be reduced by close to a megawatt hour per year, or one thousand kilowatt hours per annum. Used to fuel an electric car we would expect to travel 5 000 kilometres on this much energy.

Reservoir Levels Surge

February 15, 2010

Following a dry 2009 and some high temperatures in January 2010 the water tanks had dropped to a level I consider ‘low’. At 46% 190 rain free days of water remained stored.

Why so low? The dry season and associated requirement to regularly irrigate the kitchen garden. There were other reasons too, tour the house to learn more.

Fortunately, now back in the land of silver clouds, tanks filled. Heading into Autumn well hydrated, the Canberra’s Sustainable House kitchen garden is going rather well.
